Leeds United have sounded out Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as their ‘prime contender’ to replace Marcelo Bielsa if the Argentine leaves this summer, according to reports.

Bielsa was linked with an exit from Elland Road earlier this summer after the Whites failed to get promoted, but the West Yorkshire club agreed to activate a one-year extension clause in his contract.

According to Football Insider, Leeds were keeping tabs on Gerrard during the summer in case Bielsa did leave and the source now claims that United – who expect the Argentine to depart if another stab at promotion fails – will continue to monitor the Liverpool legend.

Gerrard is said to have impressed Leeds chiefs following his debut season in Glasgow in which he began to restore Rangers and bridge the gap to Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers finished nine points adrift of their arch-rivals last season but sit two points clear of Neil Lennon’s side after eight games of the current campaign, having won seven and lost one.

Leeds, meanwhile, are fifth in the Championship after 11 games and the Whites face Birmingham City upon their return from the international break.
