Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has told the police and the footballing authorities that if they are serious about stamping out sectarianism then they need to take a zero-tolerance approach with every club.

McInnes was given the same “orange b*******” treatment as Gerrard after Aberdeen lost the Betfred Cup Final to Celtic at Hampden in December but claimed not a thing was said or done about that.

He has condemned an element of the Aberdeen support for tarnishing their side’s famous 2-0 Scottish Cup win at Rangers by singing the bigoted ‘Cheer Up Steven Gerrard song’ on Tuesday evening.

Those actions are now at the centre of probes from Police Scotland and the Scottish Football Association but McInnes reckons too many times those in a position of power have been more than happy to turn a blind eye to this particular issue.

A light has been shone on a rise of unsavoury sectarianism with Steve Clarke flagging up the abuse he took at Ibrox from the Rangers support and also Kris Boyd also taking similar stick from Celtic fans at Rugby Park.

McInnes has experienced bigotry at various grounds in Scotland but he admitted that December’s Betfred Cup final 1-0 is one that particularly wrangles.

"But there can't be selective reporting on this, there can't be selective condemnation of it, there can't be selective investigation from Police Scotland or whoever whenever they decide to pick and choose.
