Gerrard faces “hell of a task” as former Ger pinpoints major weakness

Former Rangers striker, Steven Thompson, fears for his old club next season as he identifies where they need to strengthen to close the gap once and for all on Celtic.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (via the Daily Record), Thompson explains the pressure that Steven Gerrard and his men will face in their attempts to win the league next season.

So what has Thompson said?

With first hand experience of what it takes to wear the famous Light Blue jersey, he is well placed to give an opinion on what next season will bring for Rangers players and when asked how difficult a task it will be to stop Celtic, he said:

“The pressure of being an Old Firm player is immense at the best of times.

“But the pressure on Rangers players next season trying to stop ten is going to be the most pressure that a Rangers side has ever been under. I don’t envy them trying to stop 10-in-a-row to be fair as it is a hell of a task.

“There’s a mentality that goes along with talent in being able to win things and Scott Brown is the epitome of that. That’s where Rangers need to look at in terms of recruiting.

“They need to sign players that know how to get the job done in terms of winning.”

So is Thompson correct?

He is correct in that Rangers players will be under pressure to stop Celtic, but to say it is purely down to stopping “10-in-a-row” is a little too simplistic and also that Gerrard needs to sign a Scott Brown type of player means little, he has been non-existent in recent Old Firm clashes.

The biggest task is to win silverware first and foremost, coming so painfully close in the 2019/20 league cup final played a huge part in what happened after the winter break, ending Celtic’s dominance is paramount to their overall confidence and a major trophy would give them the belief that was so sadly lacking in 2020.

The pressure will be huge but not because of external factors, for two seasons now Rangers have looked to be in contention and for a variety of factors have been unable to maintain a level of consistency needed to win the league – for perspective though, the Gers are well on course to surpass Celtic’s winning total from last season, progress has been made, just not enough.

The reality is that few outside of some members of the Scottish media and Celtic will acknowledge them “winning” the league this season – regardless of whether or not they deserved it – and certainly Rangers fans have never had a mentality of winning just to stop someone else, winning the league because of what they have gone through will mean more than any other title – regardless of what they claim to have won across the city.
