Red tape prevented Gregory Vignal hopping on board when the helicopter changed direction and touched down at Easter Road.

The former Rangers full-back predicts the title race could go to the wire all over again after being set on autopilot above Parkhead for the last eight seasons.

Scottish football has known some momentous title races in the past, but few to match the drama of May 22 2005 when a 1-0 win for Rangers at Easter Road handed them the title after a surprise 2-1 defeat for Celtic at Motherwell.

French star Vignal will enjoy an old pals’ reunion on Saturday when many of his team-mates who won the title in such dramatic fashion in 2005 get together for a legends’ game against Liverpool at Ibrox.

Less than 24 hours later, he will be in the dugout at Forthbank when Rangers’ women take on all-conquering Glasgow City in the semi-final of the SSE Scottish Cup.

Vignal added: “Glasgow City are the best team in the country and we must see if we can close the gap.

It’s a weekend that gives Rangers fans pause for reflection after they moved to the top of the table for the first time in the current campaign under Steven Gerrard.
