Rangers captain James Tavernier could leave the Scottish giants in the near future to try and make it in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old right-back has impressed during his five full seasons above the border, and was linked to Aston Villa last month.

Ex-Gers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton has given his thoughts on a possible move, and back a transfer to go through.

“I think so,” he told Football Insider when asked if Tavernier has the quality to play in the Premier League.

“Obviously it’s a massive test if you’re going to the Premier League, that’s the ultimate really.

“I think that’s where he would want to play.

“It’s difficult, you really have to be on your game, but I think with the right team, the right manager, if he continues to work hard he can soon do it.

“I would say he’s the best in Scotland.

“Stats don’t lie and I know people kind of obviously always say about the defending thing but he’s improving and I think as long as you see improvement that’s obviously a good thing.”

Steven Gerrard was forced to address the rumours of his skipper leaving after during the summer window, but the Liverpool legend warned the board not to sell up.

Gerrard said: “None of my best players are going.

“We want to push on, to keep growing and we want to improve.

“We don’t want to get weaker.

“I’ve just said the decision myself.

Hutton himself is a free agent after being released by Aston Villa at the end of last season, but he admits that a return to his former club is unlikely.

He added: “Maybe a few years ago there was a chance at Rangers but again it’s probably a position that they’re not in a hurry to fill.”
