Jon Flanagan will have to wait to discover his fate after elbowing Scott Brown – after his own club stepped in.

“We shall vigorously defend Mr Flanagan and have also asked for full transparency on what matters are brought forward for retrospective action.

This prompted a furious statement from a Rangers spokesman who insisted the club would "vigorously defend" their player.

The Rangers full-back’s Hampden hearing was due to be held on Thursday but has now been put back 24 hours.

“It is particularly shocking that another Rangers’ player has been singled out for retrospective action and issued with a notice of complaint while Jozo Simunovic, the Celtic player who used an elbow to fell Jermain Defoe, has escaped any kind of censure.

“It seems as if Rangers’ players are being held to a different code of conduct from players at other clubs.

Flanagan was offered a two-game ban for lashing out at the Celtic skipper during Steven Gerrard side’s 2-0 win at Ibrox on Sunday.
