Paul Lambert predicts Rangers collapse in bid to stop Ten in a Row

Paul Lambert has backed Celtic to motor into the record books by securing 10 in a row - and reckons Rangers will crash under the pressure of trying to stop them.

The former Hoops star insists Neil Lennon ’s side looked unstoppable as they blazed their way to a ninth successive title and can’t see anyone stopping them extending that run.

Lambert was a key member of Wim Jansen’s side that stopped Rangers becoming the first Scottish team to win 10 successive titles in 1997/98.

Former Rangers star Charlier Miller this week admitted to Record Sport how the agony of failing to make it over the line still hurts him to this day.

But Lambert reckons Lennon’s current Hoops side won’t lose momentum in their charge towards the perfect 10.

“I think Celtic will get even better,” he told PLZ Soccer. “They have momentum and the bit between their teeth.

“The Rangers lads will have an incredible churning in their stomach knowing they have to win at Parkhead, knowing they have to go to Pittodrie and win, places like that.

“I think that’s where it will go in Celtic’s favour. Those lads will just go and play because they know how to win.”

Lambert, currently manager of Ipswich Town in the third tier of English football, recalled how the pressure of having to stop Walter Smith’s Rangers side containing the quality of Gazza, McCoist and Laudrup among others made his first title with the Hoops his most cherished.

With the roles now reversed he doesn’t see enough about Steven Gerrard’s side to convince him they can stop a new chapter in history being written at Parkhead.

“The pressure of stopping 10 was incredible,” he said. “That for me was the hardest title.

“Now Rangers have to stop Celtic doing 10 in a row, I’m really not so sure with that team they have at the minute.

“Steven will know that you are only as good as your last game and if you don’t have success then you are going to feel the pressure. That’s the nature of the beast.

“Ultimately he hasn’t won and that’s what Rangers fans will judge him on.

“I’m delighted for Lenny. He knows the club inside out.

“The bottom line is that Celtic have been the best team for the last nine years, regardless of if Rangers were in the league or not. Celtic have been miles ahead.”
