Steven Gerrard has told Eros Grezda and Borna Barisic to shape up to deal with the rigours of Scottish football in the second half of the season, writes Gavin Berry in Tenerife.

And the Rangers gaffer’s warning came just as luckless Grezda suffered yet another set-back after picking up a foot injury during the club’s Tenerife training camp.

Speaking from Tenerife prior to Grezda picking up his injury on Thursday, Gerrard said: “This trip is almost like a rest button for both Borna and Eros.

Grezda and Barisic cost a combined £3.5 million when they were signed from Croatian side Osijek in the summer but haven’t reached the heights many expected.

Borna has shown that regularly when he’s played but we haven’t had him fit enough so he needs to get more robust.

“He has to show to us in the coming weeks that he wants to win a shirt back and when he gets his opportunity take it and find consistency.”

“First and foremost he needs to win a shirt because at the moment the players who played against Celtic have got the shirts and rightly so.
