Rangers are level on points with leaders Celtic having played a game more in the Scottish Premiership.

They are on the hunt for their first title since 2011 with Liverpool legend Gerrard in his first season as a manager.

Gerrard has generally opted for just one up top with Alfredo Morelos often favoured.

Occasionally, Kyle Lafferty has partnered the Colombian up front however it’s not clicked for the Ibrox outfit.

Gerrard made a move for former England team-mate Defoe earlier this month, snapping the former Tottenham forward up from Bournemouth on an 18-month loan.

And the Rangers boss knows that now gives him more options in the second half of the season.

“We’ve tried certain things,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“Jermain gives us the option of playing two up front, whether that be 4-4-2, a diamond, 3-5-2… it gives us that luxury. Kyle also does that we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.

“Ryan Hardie has come into the picture. It has been nice to work with four quality forwards.

“We haven’t had that luxury so that’s been really nice and a big positive."

Former Rangers star Mark Hateley believes Defoe has made the switch north of the border because he wants to win a trophy.

"Jermain's been unfortunate through his career as he hasn't won a lot,” Hateley said. “What is it, a League Cup with Tottenham?

"He didn't even play in the final as he'd moved to Portsmouth. They then got to the FA Cup final but he was cup-tied so missed out again.

"So he's at the stage where he'll be looking to add a few pieces of silverware together.

"And he's come to this club at a time where we are hungry for that again.

"For a man who's scored 162 Premier League goals to end his career not having won a medal in his own right would be a tragedy.

"At the age he is now, that will be niggling him - but he's coming to a club that offers him the chance to put that right."
