Rangers are poised to seal a season-long loan deal for Leicester City midfielder Andy King.

Former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is willing to let King leave the King Power Stadium for Ibrox after deciding his first-team chances would be limited this term.

That has opened the way for Steven Gerrard to make his move, with the 30-year-old Wales international expected in Glasgow on Thursday to tie up the switch.

Barring any late issues, King will become Rangers' tenth summer addition and follow last week's capture of winger Brandon Barker from Manchester City.

Gerrard admitted yesterday that he would like another central midfielder to join Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Greg Docherty in competing for the three available positions.

'I would like six in a perfect scenario but something unique would have to happen between now and the end of the window to have two in each position,' said the Ibrox boss, speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of tonight's Europa League qualifier second leg against FC Midtjylland.

Gerrard has now decided that King's experience and drive fits the bill as he puts the finishing touches to his squad.

Excluding loan spells, the Barnstaple-born player has spent his entire senior career with Leicester and made more than 375 appearances.

He holds the unique modern-day distinction of winning the League One, Championship and Premier League titles, having been an important part of Leicester's incredible top-flight success under Claudio Ranieri in season 2015-16.

King has found his opportunities more restricted in recent times and spent the second part of last term on loan at Derby County, where he made four appearances before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

He last played for Leicester in a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Newport County in January.

King qualifies for Wales through his grandparents and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championships.
