Despite appearing to be dead in the water, Kick-Off claims that Rangers move for Bongani Zungu could yet be re-ignited with Amiens apparently keen to move the midfielder on.

The report claims that there were a number of reasons why the deal for the South African international broke down with both a rumoured €4million fee and the players’ physical condition putting a halt to the move.

Steven Gerrard has been linked with Preston North End’s Daniel Johnson in the past week who – like Zungu – is in the last year of his contract, with his club said to be looking for a similar transfer fee to secure the early release of their player.

The ideal situation for Rangers could be a loan move with an arrangement to buy, similar to the one that saw Ianis Hagi arrive at Ibrox, however, unlike the Romanian international, Zungu’s past medical history is far from perfect and the last thing they would want to do is cough up a significant transfer fee for a player who is rarely available.

The 27-year old is currently training on his own away from the first team with relations said to have broken down between the club and the player, but Kick-Off claims that he has been offered the chance to go on loan if he signs a new contract – Amiens trying to protect an asset that they risk losing for nothing and having to pay his wages to sit in the stands in the meantime.

Given the Light Blues recent injury woes in midfield, finding a player who can contribute immediately and raise the standard of the squad is Ross Wilson’s top priority – not breaking the bank is his second – whether or not Zungu fits this profile remains to be seen.
