Golfers, bowlers and tennis players are preparing to get back in the swing on Scotland’s greens and courts in the coming weeks.

But the only swinging our football fans are doing remains on the Hotline where the tit-for-tat title feud is reaching fever pitch.

Caller Willie Waddell sparked an angry response this week when he suggested Celtic going for 10-in-a-row would devalue the Scottish game to the levels of Armenia and Gibraltar.

Brian Gerrard, Stepps, took issue and pointed out: “Willie reckons winning 10 In A Row only happens in Moldova or Armenia. Has he chosen to ignore the mighty Juventus from Italy are going for 10 next year? That will be stellar company for Celtic.”

But Robert Cameron, Glasgow, hit back saying: “Willie is bang on. The more leagues you win in a row just devalues in the league you play in. The Premiership is rapidly sinking towards the likes of Moldova, Armenia,Latvia and Gibraltar. Already being confirmed over the last few years of our by our teams (Celtic and Rangers excepted) record in Europe.”

Willie himself served up a response when he said: “The point I was making is outwith Celtic and Rangers fans, and in a country where no team other than them have won the league for 35 years, who actually cares who wins the league? It's as bad as Oxford or Cambridge crowing over who wins that two horse race.”

Talking of title bragging, the volley of gloating over Celtic’s latest success continued.

Jim McCready, Erskine, said: “I can’t see what all the fuss is about the league being finished with eight games remaining. It’s been like that for years now.”

Mark Moore, Dublin, said: “Congratulations to Celtic on their magnificent record-breaking double 9 In A Row. But to all Ibrox fans who talk of tainted titles, I'd like to remind them that Celtic have every domestic trophy since they came up to the Premiership so the stats actually say we have had it much easier since they became the 'main competition'."

John Dowdalls emailed: “Seems to me Rangers supporters are wearing more green than the Celtic fans with all this envy. Their team once again couldn’t hack it and folded like a deckchair.”

But John Young said: “Okay, Celtic are champions. We don’t like it but we have nobody to blame but ourselves so could supporters give us all a break and stop using the asterisk as an excuse and concentrate on winning the 20/21 season?”

Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox reckons James Forrest would give the late, great Jimmy Johnstone a run for his money on the wing.

But Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Bobby Lennox is comparing James Forrest to Jimmy Johnstone. What planet is he on? I wouldn’t have Forrest in a lucky bag. Jimmy didn’t spend most of his career on the injury list. Enough said.”

Onto the financial crisis facing Scottish football and Derek Morris, Falkirk, said: “As Celtic were only awarded the Premiership, any money gained through the Champions League should be distributed among all Scottish clubs.

"And as Neil Doncaster loves to get all Scottish clubs involved in a vote it should pass fairly quickly.”

Finally, away from the Old Firm, Kenny Goff is a surprised Arab. He emailed: “Why have Dundee United let Paul Watson leave? His partnership with Mark Reynolds is why we won 13 games on the bounce and got clear to win league. The United support were stunned by this.”
