Rangers target would be “too much money” claims former Celt in bizarre Sevco claim

Rangers have been linked with numerous players over the last few weeks and one name that refuses to go away is Lyndon Dykes of Livingston.

In a bizarre take, former Celtic forward, Frank McAvennie speaking to Football Insider, reckons the deal is a non-starter in a less-than-surprising bout of Sevcoitis.

So what has McAvennie said?

When asked about Rangers recent link with Dykes and the prospects of a move, he said:

“Dykes has caused problems for the Rangers and Celtic defence.

“He could have tipped his hat to Scotland and I would have endeared him but he is going to play for Australia which is fine.

“A good player but he will cost a lot of money. I do not know if Rangers could afford him.

“He will not go to Celtic because they have two very good strikers in Edouard and Griffiths. Dykes would not want to go there and play third fiddle because Edouard and Griffiths are not going anywhere.

“It would need to be Rangers and he would be too much money for them.”

So is McAvennie correct?

Hardly a University Challenge level of question but, no. McAvennie is peddling the worn out narrative that “Rangers are skint” and can’t afford anyone despite spending £7.5million on Ryan Kent last season and agreeing to pay a fee of around £3m for Ianis Hagi already this summer.

He’s also wrong about his international allegiances too, with Steve Clarke intimating just a few days ago that he has had encouraging talks with the forward about turning out for Scotland.

Dykes is rumoured to be valued at the £2m mark by Livingston, not exactly lose change but not exactly breaking the bank either and certainly within the reaches of the Light Blues – especially with the opportunity to send a couple of fringe players in the opposite direction.

All McAvennie has proved is his lack of knowledge, not only of the Scottish game but that his opinion is blinkered by years of nonsense spouted by those of a green and white persuasion.
