Rangers

Rangers endured a difficult night on Wednesday as they threw away a lead to lose 2-1 away to Kilmarnock and relinquished further ground in the Premiership title race, and the frustration of many ‘Gers fans was compounded by one significant factor at Rugby Park.

Kilmarnock’s home ground, where the Light Blues have won just twice in their last nine visits, has a synthetic pitch which was upgraded only last year (as per Daily Record). Paul Fraser, who was involved in the laying of that new surface, told the Daily Record that the material used is the highest standard of artificial turf available for football pitches.

The home team’s captain Gary Dicker goaded Rangers after Wednesday’s match, tweeting “Must have been the astro’s fault…” [via @gary_dicker], while play was temporarily stopped in the 70th minute when ‘Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was receiving treatment after getting a pellet of astroturf in his eye (as per @RangersFC on Twitter).

These fans of the Light Blues took to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction with the artificial surface at Rugby Park:

All teams that have them should be threatened with relegation until they buy a grass pitch. ??

There is no place for those pitches in the top flight

Plastic pitches have no place in professional football

Hate these pitches

— Eilidh Boyce (@EilidhBoyce) February 12, 2020

When Kilmarnock said they had a pitch like a bowling green, I didn’t think they meant indoor bowls.

Absolute joke that professional football is played on plastic. Has anyone ever seen a decent game on that surface. @Follow_Follow_ @4ladshadadream @ibroxrocks #jokeleague
