Scotland fans must wait to see Billy Gilmour in action for the senior team because he needs to show he is ready.

Scotland U21 boss Scot Gemmill is loving working with the wonderkid but reckons the Chelsea midfielder needs to continue improving and showing he can cope with the pressure.

Many Scotland fans wanted Gilmour introduced to Steve Clarke's squad for the games against Russia and San Marino this week.

There are different pathways for different players; some will get their opportunity because there's a need through injury or suspension, and some will get their opportunity through fast-track and because they are pushing so hard that their performance merits the opportunity.

But the only new name listed was Lawrence Shankland and Gemmill expects Gilmour to break through eventually.

"From the last U21 campaign, there were, I think, nine players who went on to make their debuts for Scotland, so it's great for everyone to see that there's an opportunity to go all the way to the full squad."

The 18-year-old will play for the U21s as they look to continue their impressive form and Gemmill said: "He is obviously improving all the time.
