STEVEN GERRARD today gave his thoughts on this week’s news that Allan McGregor has retired from Scotland duty.

Gerrard feels it is only the player himself who can decide when the time is right to focus solely on club football.

I was only aware of it in the last few days and I was a bit surprised, but obviously having spoken to Allan now I respect his decision and we move forward.” When asked if McGregor could play into his forties, Gerrard replied: “Maybe that’s been part of his decision, he wants to extend his club career a bit longer.

“I know the person and I know the player and he knows his body, and if he feels it is going to help him from a personal point of view, and he is going to feel better for Rangers, then obviously good.

“Only Allan knows his body and what he feels coming off astro-turf or grass or after he has played three games in a week.

But it’s definitely Scotland’s loss as he’s a top goalie.”

The Gers goalkeeper, who has earned 42 caps for his country, decided to call time on an international career that began back in 2007, despite establishing himself as Alex McLeish’s first-choice number one between the posts.
