Why Celtic and Rangers are in line for major Champions League boost after recent failures

As it currently stands the Scottish league only gets one qualifying spot for the Champions League and whoever wins the Scottish Premiership still only enters through the first qualifying round.

Instead it is believed Agnelli will push for the creation of a new third tier competition in Europe, which would be played alongside the Champions League and Europa League.

"[Agnelli] doesn't support a closed shop Champions League and he does not want to challenge the domestic league structure," the source added.

A re-structuring of the qualification for the Champions League would be a boost to both Celtic and Rangers, as they have struggled in recent years to even reach the group stages.

The Hoops have failed to qualify in last two years and have been forced to drop into the Europa League qualifications and the last time Celtic made it out of the group stages of the Champions League was back in the 2012/13 season.

As for this season Celtic and Rangers are currently in the Europa League group stages.

The Hoops dropped down into the competition after losing to CFR Cluj in their Champions League qualification round and then subsequently beat Swedish side AIK in the Europa League play-off.
