Why the Premier League may be on a collision course with UEFA if they stick to plans to get this season finished

You'll Never Walk Alone: The victory banners are up in Liverpool already after the Premier League yesterday announced its plans to finish the 2019/’20 season Premier League chiefs could be on a collision course with UEFA if they don't finish their season by a strict deadline of June 30 – which means that they need to get games restarted by mid-May to meet that deadline.

While these are unprecedented times amid the coronavirus pandemic and fresh negotiations could open up the prospect of the Premier League season finishing in July, UEFA made it clear in a circular to all members last Tuesday that their June 30 deadline to finish all competitions is still in place.

At present, UEFA are stating their determination to stage next season’s Champions League and Europa League on schedule.

If we were to get to a point that saw English football still finishing this season while all the other European leagues have moved on to a new chapter, the Premier League could face the prospect of a season without participation in UEFA competitions.

Meanwhile, the English Football Association plans to extend the season ‘indefinitely’ and seemingly open up the prospect of finishing off this season later in 2020.

In addition, if the Premier League season was declared void, the organisation could be in breach of contract with the broadcasters who fund their lucrative business.

“However, our Board has agreed for this limit to be extended indefinitely for the 2019-20 season in relation to professional football.” The use of the word ‘indefinitely’ to describe the extension to the season appeared to end the prospect of the season being declared void, yet that scenario could still be on the table if the Covid-19 crisis reaches a peak in the UK in June, as the British government predicts it will.
